Paris Est, or Gare de l'Est, was completed in 1849 by architect François-Alexandre Duquesney for the Compagnie du Chemin de Fer de Paris à Strasbourg (Paris-Strasbourg Railway) initially under the name Strasbourg Platform and was renamed Paris Est in 1854.
Although an important terminus for SNCF TGV services in France and international services to Germany and Switzerland Est is only the 5th busiest railway station in Paris with 33m annual passengers. SNCF’s TER (Transport express regional) and Transilien divisions also operate from Paris Est.
Paris Est was the terminal for Compagnie des Wagons-lits luxurious Express d'Orient (Orient Express) service to Constantinople, which commenced in 1883 and still operates today as the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE) albeit not beyond Venice.
